Characterization and pollution potential of leachate from urban landfills during dry and wet periods in arid regions

Abstract Leachate originating from municipal solid waste landfills poses a serious contamination threat to public health. The study performed bio-physicochemical characterization of leachate two in Oman, i.e., Multaqa landfill (MLL) and Barka (BLL) before after rainfall. Samples were characterized for 92 parameters. Additionally, the pollution index (LPI) was estimated assess expected levels potential environmental health risks. found high value parameters without any rainfall incidents. Pearson correlations (±ve) are seen at more than 90% all cases, which is strong association (r>0.75) measured both MLL BLL. Rainfall significantly reduced concentrations organic contaminants solids due dilution. revealed about 18%–29% 14%–28% reductions LPI sub-index inorganic contaminants, respectively, overall values higher compared with similar findings literature. Such deviations could be attributed unsegregated nature waste, resulting formation or disposal volume smaller area. Therefore, recommends efficient management strategies reduce groundwater contamination.
